I wrote this song sometime around 1990. Although the subject matter is superficially about two fictitious lovers somewhere in rural America, the scene was actually inspired by my experiences visiting my neighbor’s homestead in Pennsylvania in the mid ‘60s. We all grew up in typical baby-boomer postwar suburbia, and knew little or nothing about "farm" life. However, it so happened that one of my good friends had a summer house out in the hinterlands of Pennsylvania. His mom had grown up in this house and it was relatively unchanged since her youth. The house had electricity and not much else. There was a real outhouse, a hand pump for water in the kitchen, and a wood fired cast iron stove for cooking. Just outside the house and across the dirt road was the blueberry patch, 50 cents a quart, pick it yourself. There was a big barn with a rope swing inside, and just down the lane, a pond for a relaxing canoe ride in the moonlight. In the morning we would be awakened by the aroma of home made blueberry pancakes being cooked on that cast iron wood stove. Mmmmm.
