This song started out as a frailing banjo riff way back in 1973 when I was staying at the "Innesfree" school overlooking the Delaware River in Mylenville, Pa. I wasn’t a student there; more like a freeloader. This place was a beautiful old estate that had been leased by some high minded hippies that wanted to run a "free school." I don’t think they ever really got it off the ground, but they were kind and generous, and let me stay there for a couple of months after the band’s house in Hawley burned to the ground. (cue violins)
All of the instrumental solo sections in this song are played over the changes from the original banjo riff. I couldn’t think of anything else to do with the song until ten years later when the other parts and the lyrics arrived like some visitor on a mystery train.
